Hlinka Gretzky Cup
Fascinating NHL prospect with big upside. Did not play extremely well in the tournament but I like his abilities as an NHL prospect. The first thing that stands out is that he is a below average skater who plays with below average pace. However, he brings a lengthy frame, excellent puck control, strength (especially on his skates), shooting, and very high hockey sense. I found he has the right ideas for many plays, but the execution was a little off. Maybe it was the step up in competition from the BCHL to this level. With some refinement to his game, he could quickly become a star in the NCAA. Wood is also strong defensively, especially with his stick, where he was intercepting and stealing many pucks. Very well-positioned, smart, and takes a clinical approach to the game by attempting plays to high danger areas. Adding some pace to his game while refining his execution gives him the potential to become a superstar player. He didn’t play like it here, but his development this season will be fascinating.
