Hlinka Gretzky Cup
A well-rounded two-way defenseman who made an impact in every game. He battles hard and wins puck battles in the defensive zone. He is extremely consistent at defending off the rush and against the cycle. Specifically, he uses his stick and positions himself properly on rush defence. Struggles to exit the zone cleanly with in transition as his outlet passes are hard and decisive, but can often miss the intended target. Engages physically frequently and clears the front of the net. Activates offensively at the right times and does not get in the way by overcomplicating the process– contributes positively to the team’s offense and has a good shot from the point. Might have been Canada’s best defense option on the powerplay in the tournament. Skating is well-above average and his mechanics allow him to weave through players and around the ice. Excellent hockey sense– specifically for defending and off-puck positioning. Exits the zone cleanly most of the time but needs to improve consistency in that regard. Two-way NHL potential is off the charts but needs to do more to show his play in transition, as well as making himself a more established offensive player. Has many of the tools of a first round NHL defenseman.
